CE Compliant

From the 1st of July 2013 it becomes mandatory that all construction products including Folding Sliding Doors MUST display the CE Mark. Products not CE Marked after this date cannot legally be placed on the market!

Mandating CE Marking enforces the disclosure of performance between different manufacturers and suppliers allowing for clear comparisons of performance and enabling customers to make an informed choice!

CE Marking demonstrates a product has been tested against a harmonised standard and the performance information is reliable and has been registered by a notified body.

The Folding Sliding Door Company has produced a Declaration Of Performance and is fully CE compliant!

CE Compliance

What is changing?

CE Marking will become mandatory in the UK from 1st July 2013 as set out in the Construction Products Regulation 2011. Therefore any window or external door product that is NOT CE Marked after this date cannot legally be placed on the market.

Why has it changed? What is it for?

For some time all electrical and medical devices have needed a CE Mark to demonstrate safety and performance. This is simply being extended to construction products including Windows, Doors and Conservatories etc

So What? What does this mean to me? What if I buy a product that is Not CE Marked after 1st July 2013? What is it for?

CE Marking enforces the disclosure of performance between different manufacturers allowing you to make an informed choice and clear comparison between products. Would you want a heart valve or buy a TV that didn’t have a Declaration of Performance?

  • It will be illegal to supply non-CE marked Products After 1st July 2013

It is unclear how the system will be policed at the moment but some potential outcomes

  • Non CE Marked products will not meet Building Regulations hence Buildings Inspector will not sign off a project
  • Products may not meet criteria for Insurance Backed Schemes such as FENSA
  • Insurance Companies may void claims upon discovery of the installations of Non CE Marked products
  • You may be putting your own safety at risk!

This is the law from 1st July 2013 - If its not CE Marked DO NOT buy it..!!

Q. What is changing?

A. CE Marking will become mandatory in the UK from 1st July 2013 as set out in the Construction Products Regulation 2011. Therefore any window or external door product (without resistance to fire and/or smoke leakage characteristics) ''NOT '' CE Marked after this date cannot legally be placed on the market.

Q. Who is responsible for CE Marking?

A. Everyone in the supply chain has a responsibility to cascade the correct data, but the organisation who places the complete product on the market is responsible for affixing the CE Mark and accompanying information. In conclusion this is the organisation that brings the frame and glass together. This organisation is described as the ‘manufacturer’.

Q. I am an installer who purchases unglazed windows.

A. If you are an installer who purchases unglazed frames and glazed units separately, you are classed as the manufacturer and have responsibility for affixing the CE Mark and accompanying information.

Q. I am an installer who purchases glazed windows.

A. If you are an installer who purchases glazed frames, whilst you are not absolved of all responsibility you will not be required to affix the CE Mark and accompanying information. However you will have a responsibility to ensure that the CE Mark and information is available so that you can cascade it to the purchaser.

Q. What should I do next?

A. CE Marking becomes a regularity requirement across the EU from 1st July 2013 as a result of the Construction Products Regulation.. If your product is not CE Marked on or after this date,

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I buying from a specialist company in folding sliding doors?

The word specialist derives from the medical field, meaning “A physician whose practice is limited to a particular branch of medicine or surgery”. To specialise in one particular field of the glazing industry is to have accurate knowledge and skill in that field. The term folding sliding door specialist is used so flippantly by companies that also manufacture windows, French doors, sliding patio doors, roofs and conservatories.

There are many upvc and joinery companies that believe that they can simply manufacture some rectangle panels, fit some hardware on them that they purchase from their hardware supplier and call themselves a folding sliding door specialist. We specialise in folding sliding doors only. The design and manufacture of folding sliding doors is an exact science. Do not buy from chancers.

Our doors are manufactured using our own UKAS tested profile and hardware; this has been developed over the past eight years with our three main designers offering a wealth of engineering knowledge and having over 25 years experience in the science of creating Folding Sliding Doors systems alone. Our system is manufactured to the highest standards of ISO9001:2008, thus gaining us the following accreditations:

Are all folding sliding doors the same?

We often hear customers on the telephone say “well one folding sliding door is the same as any another, isn't it?” or “I would like a folding sliding door”. All folding sliding doors are not the same. This is a bit like going into a car dealership and saying “I would like a car”. There are big differences from manufacturer to manufacturer. Materials used, hardware used, strength, longevity, function and warranty.

Why can you compete on price?

Most companies offering folding sliding doors are based in high value property areas. They pay high rates for the property they are based at. We are based in regeneration area, our rates are low and discounted as we provide local employment to over 25 of our factory staff that come from the area.

Nearly all of our competitors buy their doors from else where or buy their hardware and profiles at a loaded price through a middle man or supplier. We manufacture our own hardware at our quality assured UKAS & ISO-9001 certified factory.

We buy our aluminium profiles directly from our extruders in Banbury and Guangdong and our timber from the UK's largest importers. We do not buy through an agent or middle man. We do not have expensive sales reps. We have no need to hard sell.

What do you mean when you say "We will beat any like for like quotation"?

There are many different folding sliding doors on the market and it can be quite confusing as to which one to buy.

Like for Like refers to: specialist engineered folding sliding doors and not "I'll get some upvc, aluminium or timber, make some rectangles and stick some hardware on them" folding sliding doors. Like for Like refers to: 70mm Thermally broken aluminium, 70mm Thermally broken aluminium and timber clad and 65mm to 70mm Laminated hardwood.

Like for Like refers to: an inline folding sliding door that does not have hinges, rollers or track fixed to the face of the system. You can not see the rollers or track when the door is closed. The hinges are not face fixed, they do not have large plastic covers on them to hide the hinge and fixing screws. The system can be inward or outward stacking and still maintain security. The system can be any possible configuration of your choice.

There is not a like for like offer on Upvc as we are the only manufacturer of the inline folding sliding door, of which we have the designright until 2017.

What is the difference with your track and other tracks?

We offer an inline out of site track system, this track system is strong and secure. It is supplied to you flush as standard, however it can incorporate a sill. All our running gear is concealed and is resistant to attack from potential intruders.

You should be very cautious when choosing your door system as the track is a vital part of the security of your door. If an intruder can get access to the track, they have easy access to your home with the simple lift of a crow bar. These systems can only be inward opening. Many of these door systems do not have a water resistant flush track option.

What is the difference in delivery waiting period?

Many companies (specialists) in the folding sliding door industry have their doors manufactured in Europe and ship them to you, hence the delivery waiting period being from 8 to 24 weeks. We manufacture between 200 to 300 door sets per week and have a maximum of 3 weeks delivery waiting period. Once the doors are manufactured and quality checked, they are boxed and racked ready for delivery or collection.

An important point to note is that you need to consider what happens if things go wrong. As with any other product that you purchase, they can break down or get damaged. The question here is, how long do you have to wait for a replacement?

Our replacement policy is that customers requiring replacements are jumped to the front of the manufacturing queue to reduce your waiting time. We do not have to import your replacement parts from another country.

Do all companies selling folding sliding doors manufacture them?

No, there are many companies that buy their doors from manufactures abroad and then sell them to you. These countries include Germany, Belgium, France, Spain, Turkey and even China. Some companies buy their doors from more than one country.

We have factories in Bradford UK, Orlando Florida USA, Kelowna Canada. Each factory supplies its own country.

Is the locking on all doors secure?

Many systems are fitted with aluminium rod locking with plastic cones on the top. Their reason for this is that if you were to use steel bolts it would wear the aluminium track.

Our tracking is extruded to specification "6063:T6". "T6" indicates the tempered strength of the aluminium, T6 = Very Strong. Many manufactures use "T4" or "T5". "T4" can be bent to create curved tracks.

Our company chairman was once employed by a European folding sliding door company that use this type of locking. Whilst in their employment he was shown a way to unlock a locked door in seconds with the use of basic tools. As more of these doors enter the market there is a chance that this information will get into the wrong hands.

Other systems that have appeared on the market over the last 2 years use flush shoot bolt locking that is fitted to the face of the door. As a result you have to manually lock each bolt separately. The system looks very well presented, however the running tracks on an outward opening system leave the door vulnerable to intruder attack and entry. These doors are only sold as inward opening.

Security is one of our main concerns when it come to door design.

All our locking has hardened steel hook locks, dead bolts and top and bottom shoot bolts. All our locks are tested secure and have a "Sold Secure" rating. We are a Sold Secure approved installer.

At present The Folding Sliding Door Company is the only company in the UK to submit its system to a UKAS accredited testing station for PAS 24 security endurance testing and passed with flying colours.

During the tests the doors were hammered, rammed, pounded, pulled, pushed, lifted and crow bared by forces that equalled a 20 stone man trying to force entry.

Are all door systems weather tight?

Most systems on the market are weather tight, with high performance rubber seals and brush seals. However, there are some systems that have little or no seals at all. One crude but easy test is to close a folding door onto a sheet of paper and try to pull the paper out. If it pulls out easily there is not a water tight compression on the seals.

Our system has been tested at a UKAS accredited testing station and passed the PAS23 weather test to extreme weather conditions of over 300 pascals.

We use 2 rubber EPDM seals on each side of each panel and high performance brush seals on the top and bottom of the panel.

The system also includes a tongue and groove feature to (1) prevent water infiltration, (2) keep the system stable with one panel interlocking with another and (3) to prevent attack by an intruder.

Is a folding sliding door easy to install?

As for our competitions doors, we couldn't really say. However, feedback that we have received from installers that have installed different systems, has been that ours is the easiest system they have ever installed.

Our system is supplied with easy to follow fitting instructions, (click here view our online video guide).

Do all systems come with a long warranty?

Most manufactures only offer a 12 month warranty, some a little longer.

We are so confident in our product that all of our doors come with a 25 Year Warranty.

All of our door systems are also supplied with a 10 year Insurance Backed Guarantee by Home Pro Insurance.

Are you an environmentally aware company?

Yes we are, we only buy our timber from the largest importers in the UK that are members of the following

All of our factory has be fitted out with sodium lighting that uses approximately 10% of the electricity that a florescent light uses and produces more light.

We reuse and recycle nearly all of our waste.

How do you dispose of your waste?

As a manufacturer that creates a lot of waste, we feel that is our moral responsibility to recycle all of our waste.

  • Our timber waste is chipped and collected by a large extraction unit.
  • The chipped waste timber is then extracted to a briquette machine.
  • The briquette machine compresses the waste with 8 tonnes of pressure.
  • Small briquettes of timber waste are formed that are nearly as hard as a cricket ball.
  • These briquettes are the used to fuel heaters to heat the factory.
  • All of our aluminium waste is placed in bins that are collected by a recycling agent.

A True Specialist

Inline folding sliding doors are best left to the experts.

Too many corners have been cut in recently launched systems. A common failing is the use of either a top or bottom running track but not both.

These design omissions can compromise the effectiveness, security and operating limits of the system.

The Folding Sliding Door Company currently manufactures doors in sizes up to 4 metres high and 15 metres wide

The Folding Sliding Door Company offers a 25 year lifetime warranty on its product. "That's how much confidence we have in our product".

The Folding Sliding Door Company bites back!

Folding Sliding Doors Limited is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Demand has rocketed and competitors may have arrived but this complex product is still best left to the experts, says founder Paul Shearman.

It was 2001 when Paul Shearman, a joiner working in the window industry, developed an inline folding sliding door system. The main improvement over previous attempts was in the hardware. He used flush hinges, slim handles and a running track on the top and bottom of the opening for even weight distribution and ease of operation of the opening panels.

The appeal of this product was that the door leaves folded neatly to create a wider opening – perfect for cafes in summertime or rooms in the home that face the garden, to give just two examples.

Paul Shearman continued to improve his product. "We were the first to develop an inline PVC-U folding sliding door system with no face fixed hardware and concealed running gear in 2003", he says. Paul's development was an advance on the cumbersome out bound hardware that was available and the introduction of running tracks meant smooth operation and the positive support to enable the manufacture of taller and wider folding sliding doors. Flush tracks were fitted as standard, complying with Part M disability access regulations, and the absence of faced fixed hinges made the installation more secure.

Within two years Folding Sliding Doors had acquired premises and was employing 16 staff to manufacture the product, which utilised VEKA Matrix PVC-U window and door profile. Turnover had reached £1 million by 2003. This year the Bradford company is on course to achieve £10 million turnover.

Today, the company makes inline folding sliding doors in aluminium, timber, ali-clad timber and a range of PVC-U systems. In addition, Folding Sliding Doors manufactures its own range of hardware which it supplies to some major retail and commercial trade manufacturers.

The popularity of these glazed doors has soared during the company's time in business as property owners have realised the potential of wider openings in commercial buildings and homes. This type of product, often supplied by Folding Sliding Doors, has featured on many TV home improvement programmes.

The product commands a high value. Consequently many installation companies have been keen to add it to their portfolio and some new companies have tried their hand at manufacturing it. A recent trend has seen several window systems companies develop their own system in an effort to grab a share of this market for themselves.

Installation Instructions

Installation Instructions

FSDC Global offer a fully warranted installation service, and in most cases this extends the warranty of your chosen product.

FSDC Global also offer a supply only service for people who intend to install the doors themselves or by a third party installer.

The instructions below refer to the installation of folding patio doors / folding sliding doors / bifold doors / accordion doors;

  1. The bottom track is the most critical step. Ensure the track is fixed firm and level in both directions. For longer tracks you may require a laser level. Pre-drill the track 100mm from each end and then 500mm apart. The track port is positioned at the stacking side.
  1. The first jamb to fix is the one that the door is to stack open against. Ensure the jamb is fixed square on the track and level on both faces. This jamb must be firmly fixed to the wall to carry the weight of the door. Blockwork or cavity fixed jamb must be firmly strapped to ensure no side to side or rocking movement.
  1. Position the top track on top of the jamb and position, place the other jamb under the top track to hold it in place. If practically possible, do not fix the top track at this stage.

Ensure the second jamb is fixed square on the track and level on both faces. This jamb must be firmly fixed to the wall to carry the weight of the door. Blockwork or cavity fixed jamb must be firmly strapped to ensure no side to side or rocking movement.

  1. Ensure the top track is fixed firm and level in both directions. For longer tracks you may require a laser level. Pre-drill the track 100mm from

each end and then 500mm apart. The track port is positioned at the stacking side.

Measuring Instructions

Measuring Instructions

How do you open that space in your home to incorporate a folding sliding door?

The first thing that you need is an opening to accommodate the door. The opening must be of sound structure to allow the door to be installed correctly.

The opening walls and floor can be constructed from structural timber, steel, brick, concrete or concrete block. Thermalite, cinder blocks or breeze blocks are not suitable to obtain a firm structural fixing.

The head of the opening must be constructed from steel, structural timber or concrete. Light metal lintels and timber sub-frames are not suitable to obtain a firm structural fixing.

The next step is to measure your opening This must be done from side to side and top to bottom. Always allow 10mm tolerance in your measurements. It is advisable to use a large spirit level to check the opening as an opening that is not level can effect your measurement.

When deciding the way that you would like your threshold to be situated, always make allowances in your measurement to accommodate the bottom track. Note: the frame height includes the bottom track.

Celebrating 10 years of successful business!

Celebrating 10 years of successful business!

“Jack of one trade - Master of one!” these are the words of Paul Shearman and probably the reason that this year sees the Folding Sliding Door Company celebrating ten successful years in business.

In 2001 Paul and his wife, Tracey, identified a gap in the market for folding sliding doors. Before taking the plunge, Paul undertook some market research asking 200 architects around the country if they would be interested in the product. Of these, 196 replied expressing interest and The Folding Sliding Door Company was born. Ten years later, the Folding Sliding Door Company is the largest designer and manufacturer of folding sliding doors in the UK. This Bradford based company has 68 employees currently with that figure expected to rise due to the demand for their quality products and has premises that occupy 55,000 square feet. “In fact”, states Noreen Williams, the Sales and Marketing Director, “our clients are taken aback by the size of our premises here in Bradford. It’s rather like a tardis - its façade can be deceiving!”

Year on year, The Folding Sliding Door Company has seen significant growth, due not only to the innovative design and high quality products, but also because they specialise in this one product alone. Offering six different materials with a range to suit all budgets. The staff that have contributed to The Folding Sliding Door Company’s success by being able to become specialists - from the sales team through to the staff in the factory. As part of their celebrations, founder and CEO Paul Shearman is due to take everyone and their partners for a long weekend to Tenerife!
